A growing body of research proves that fruits should be the foundation of a healthy diet.The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010 recommend you make one-half of your plate Fruits are sources of many essential nutrients that are underconsumed. When eaten in moderation, fruit can be a very healthy part of a nutritious diet. While there are dozens- if not hundreds- of reasons why you need to eat fruit, these are definitely the top five in my opinion;

Balanced diet : An eating pattern where fruit is part of an overall healthy diet provides antioxidants that help repair damage done by free radicals. It's recommended that you eat at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit every day. There's evidence that people who eat at least 5 portions of fruit a day have a lower risk of heart disease, stroke and some cancers.

Source of good dietary fibre : Fruits are an excellent source of fibre, which is critical to healthy digestion. They in turn help in lowering your cholesterol. It also helps to maintain a healthy gut and prevent constipation and other digestion problems. A diet high in fibre can also reduce your risk of bowel cancer.

Weight management : Because they're low in calories and high in fiber, fruits and vegetables can help you control your weight. By eating more fruits and vegetables and fewer high-calorie foods, you'll find it much easier to control your weight.

Health promoting properties : Diets high in fruits and vegetables are widely recommended for their health-promoting properties because of their concentrations of vitamins, especially vitamins C and A; minerals, especially electrolytes; and more recently phytochemicals, especially antioxidants. Eating plenty of fruits everyday can help reduce your risk of;

  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Type II diabetes
  • Certain cancers.

Boosts Immune system : Eating the right amount of fruits everyday will help boost the immune system and keep it working at the optimum level as well as protecting you against serious health conditions.

While it may take a little creativity, effort and an open mind to try new things, switching to a diet with more fruits is definitely worth it!
